Recently, there has been significant national discussion about the condition of America’s infrastructure, including roads and bridges. This discussion was prompted in part by the collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its catastrophic failure resulted in the deaths of 13 people and 145 injuries during rush hour. Numerous independent assessments have warned that more investment is needed to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Across Arizona, pavement condition and bridges are assessed annually. For the safety of the public, an adequate amount of investment is needed to keep transportation assets in acceptable condition.
Bridge and Pavement Conditions are measured with three separate indicators:
- Bridge conditions: the percent of Arizona bridges in poor condition
- Interstate highway conditions: percent of Arizona interstate highway miles that are in poor condition
- Non-Interstate highway conditions: percent of Arizona highway miles that are in poor condition
